Academic Policy

  • Knowledge Concepts: Students will take an exam for each unit to test their knowledge acquired relating to various physical activities, sports, and physical fitness concepts.

  • Active Engagement: Standing or sitting around in P.E. will not be awarded. Students must be actively engaged, vocal in their opinions during group activities, work independently, and work as a team member.  Team members will report on the contribution of other members to keep everyone accountable. Participation in warm-ups, activity extensions, and game play is required in order to receive full credit.

  • Homework/Projects: Students will have at least one homework assignment per unit. The homework will be used to assess the knowledge and skills that they have acquired about a sport or physical activity.  Homework will be graded through a point system according to a pre-established rubric and will be turned in to the homework bin before class begins. A minimum of one project must be completed during their semester of PE, and will follow the same criteria as set for homework.

  • Missed Homework / Late work: If a student fails to complete a homework assignment they may turn it in late and suffer 10 percentage point reductions for each day the assignment is late. It is the students’ responsibility to keep track of their grades and any missing assignments. If a student misses a day it is their responsibility to ask the teacher for any missing assignments or materials for that day.  You will have one day for every day you are gone to complete your make-up work.

  • Redoing assignments: Students will have the opportunity to redo each assignment one time. They will have three days to complete the redo once the assignment has been returned.  The purpose of allowing students to redo assignments is to allow them to learn from their misunderstandings and mistakes and to take this knowledge and apply it more accurately to their work.

  • Preparedness: Being prepared in the proper uniform is a vital aspect of Physical Education and understanding this leads to being better able to participate. Participation in warm-ups/stretching, activity extensions, and game play is required in order to receive full credit, and these will be made possible through wearing proper attire. Partial credit will be given for wearing improper attire.

  • Skill Performance: Students will be tested on various skills that they acquire through the different sports and activities. These skills align with the CPS Scope & Sequence for PE and are an important part of gaining physical knowledge of various team sports and lifelong fitness concepts.

  • Medical and  Absence Policy: Written articles are expected for everyday missed of participation ( i.e. suspension, unexcused absence, medical notes/ absences, extended excused absences)
  • Extended absences or medical notes excusing from physical activity require written articles for every 2 missed days.
  • 1 article for every day suspended
  • Written articles must be on a physical activity, nutrition, health, or fitness related concept
  • Articles can be from online sources, magazines, newspapers, etc.
  • Include a summary of the article in your own words, as well as answering the following questions in paragraph form using complete sentences; do not just write the question and answer it:
  1. What is the main idea of the article? What information is the writer trying to get across?
  2. What is one of more things you learned from the article?
  3. What were one or more things you thought was interesting?
  4. Is there article something you can apply to your life? If so how?

(ex. A new diet, nutrition advice, exercise)

  1. What questions did you have when reading the article?
  • Must be typed (Not Hand Written)
  • Articles must be printed off or copied and attached to the written work
  • All articles are due Friday each week you are out. If student is absent Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Student should have 3 articles completed for Friday.

  • Required Materials: In order for students to be successful in this course they must come prepared to class with the proper Sarah E. Goode Physical Education uniform consisting of shorts and T-shirt, as well as a pair of laced gym shoes. A folder and pen/pencil should be stored in your PE locker. Students will go outside and can store school appropriate sweat shirt and pants in their PE locker to be worn outside only and student must wear PE uniform over or under the sweats. A mesh bag to carry home uniforms and shoes are recommended. All items can be paid for and retrieved from the main office.

 Uniform Guidelines:

  • Approved: Goode Physical Education uniform consisting of shorts and T-shirt, a pair of laced gym shoes, sweatpants and sweatshirts.
  • Unapproved: jewelry (dangling earrings, necklaces, bracelets, watches, rings, non-prescription glasses) open-backed shoes, dress shoes, flats, boots, or school uniforms under PE uniforms.

Classroom Procedures

  • Entrance Procedure: Students should be on the lower level prior to the bell or they will be considered tardy. They should enter the locker room and dress promptly into their PE uniform and use the bathroom if necessary.  Once a student is dressed they should exit the locker room immediately and line up in their attendance spot alphabetically, by last name. Students have 7 minutes from the bell to complete this task or they will be considered tardy to roll call.  Student should stand against the wall, not wander socializing with peers.
  • Transitioning to locations: Students will transition to the proper location when directed by teacher. Students should stay in a line and should keep pace with each other.
  • Use of equipment: Students should only be in possession of equipment when directed to do so by teacher. Student should be respectful of equipment and report any damage.
  • Bathroom Procedures: Student should use bathroom before exiting the locker room. If it is an emergency and student is outside they can be escorted by security with the teacher’s permission.  If emergency and student is inside student can use one of the bathrooms outside the gymnasium with teacher’s permission.
  • Water breaks: Students are free to take their water breaks using the nearest water fountain as long as the teacher is not in direct instruction.
  • Closure: Teacher will review concepts from the days lesson and collect any equipment used for the day before dismissing students.
  • Exiting Procedure: Once students have changed back into their school uniform they may exit the locker room and wait at door at the bottom of the stairs for the bell to be dismissed.
