FALL 2021: Computer Science Essentials

Computer Science Essentials introduces computer systems and their expanding role in our world, in your future.  CSE investigates the impact computers have had, are having, and will have on society. Computers are not just for mathematicians, scientists, and engineers. They are part of almost all jobs and professions.  Computers are vital tools for solving problems in medicine or banking or entertainment or pollution control.  CSE introduces students to underlying technologies, logical thinking, problem analysis, and problem-solving. We will investigate internet technology and webpage design. CSE opens doors.  I encourage you to enter!!!

You are exploring! You are forming your goals! You want to create, to make things! You have ideas, dreams. Understanding computers can help you turn your dreams into reality. It's not just your teachers encouraging you to learn computer science.  Please watch the video below.

Computer Science covers a wide range of topics and ideas. Computers are tools that we can use to solve problems.  These problems may appear in almost every aspect of our lives.

The ability to solve problems is the number one skill employers and investors are seeking

(see https://lafollette.wisc.edu/images/NACE_top_10_and_competencies_2020.pdf Links to an external site. ).

Certainly, we will study computers & computer programming, but we will emphasize problem-solving.  We will identify problems, express problems, solve problems, and appreciate how computers can help in problem-solving. Perhaps YOU will create new applications for computers and you will use them to solve some of our many problems. Let the journey begin!

NOTE: This is an introduction to computer science.  We will cover a variety of topics. There are no Computer Science prerequisites.    You should be comfortable with math at the middle-school level.  Please contact me if you have questions or concerns.  Optional review sessions on basic Algebra, Geometry, and Statistics will be available.  We will investigate computers, their social impact, careers, and plans for the future.  You are expected to participate in group discussions, you will have some (short) writing assignments.  Discussions & essays topics can be influenced by class interests and research or assignments in other courses.  Please contact me if you having questions regarding writing multi-paragraph essays.

SUGGESTION: You are all able to do well in Computer Science Essentials. However, CSE is difficult to cram for. Please keep up with the material. If you have questions, ask!!!  Ask me.  Ask a classmate!  Ask Student Services. We are here to help.
